Crane, Rigging and Hoisting Safety Training


Introduction

The purpose of this course is to educate people, who perform crane, rigging and hoisting operations on the rules, regulations and proper application of safe work practices and operating procedures involved in day-to-day activities. It is designed for individuals who have a basic understanding of, or who are actively involved in these activities.

Classroom exercises involve the use of many hands-on training aids, both visual and audio-visual materials. The practical portion of the course requires the use of a lifting device, usually a crane, picker, or shop bridge crane. The lifting device must be in safe, acceptable, certified working condition in accordance with safety regulations, prior to course commencement. (Operator of mobile crane, or boom truck must be certified.)


Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the operator will:

1. List safe work practices and procedures for riggers working with cranes and hoists.
2. Determine safe working loads (SWL) of rigging equipment.
3. Understand a crane’s capabilities and limitations.
4. Calculate load weights and select the appropriate rigging gear for the job.
5. Demonstrate techniques for inspection and maintenance of rigging equipment.
6. Demonstrate the use of proper signals, and the signaler’s responsibilities.
7. Understand Occupational Health and Safety Act with regards to employer/employee/supplier responsibilities, and the General Safety Regulations. Identify any site-specific rules or procedures that may apply.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants are issued a certificate in recognition of this achievement. This course is not designed to certify individuals as highly skilled riggers or operators, as only through practice and use of the prescribed safe operating procedures will skill level increase.
