Forklift Safety Training


Introduction

The purpose of this course is to educate people who perform forklift operations on the rules, regulations and proper application of safe work practices and operating procedures involved in day-to-day activities. It is designed for individuals who have a basic understanding of, or who are operating forklifts.

Classroom exercises involve the use of many training aids. The practical portion of the course requires the use of a forklift that is in safe, acceptable, and certified working condition in accordance with safety regulations, prior to course commencement.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the operator will:
    1. Be able to explain the difference in handling characteristics between machines having empty and loaded forks.
    2. Be able to explain the stability triangle and center of gravity.
    3. Be able to understand and apply load charts with relation to loads to be lifted.
    4. Be able to explain reasons for maintaining up-to-date maintenance records, and why proper maintenance is important for safe, efficient and productive operation.
    5. Identify controls and their purpose, and demonstrate the proper use of controls.
    6. Identify and explain forklift safety features and their importance.
    7. Be familiar with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations with regards to employer/employee/supplier responsibilities, and the General Safety Regulations.
    8. Be familiar with any site-specific rules or procedures that may apply.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants are issued a certificate in recognition of this achievement. This course is not designed to certify individuals as highly skilled operators, only through practice and use of the prescribed safe operating procedures will skill level increase.
