TRAINING

Overhead Crane Operator Safety Training

Introduction

The purpose of this course is to educate employees who operate overhead cranes and hoists on the rules, regulations and proper application of safe work practices and operating procedures involved in day-to-day activities. It is designed for individuals who are actively involved in these operations.

Classroom exercises involve the use of many hands-on training aids, both visual and audio-visual materials. The practical portion of the course requires the use of an "Overhead Crane" which includes hoists, jib cranes, gantry cranes, monorails, top running and under slung cranes and below-the-hook lifting devices. The lifting device must be in safe, acceptable, certified working condition in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety regulations, prior to course commencement.

    1. Understand safety procedures and demonstrate safe operating practices.
    2. Identify and explain the functions of all major crane components and assemblies.
    3. Determine safe working loads (SWL) of rigging equipment.
    4. Calculate load weights and select the appropriate rigging gear for the job.
    5. Identify CSA standards that are pertinent to overhead cranes and hoisting equipment and how they relate to inspections and maintenance.
    6. Demonstrate the use of proper signals, and the signaler's responsibilities.
    7. Understand Occupational Health and Safety Act with regards to employer/employee/supplier responsibilities, and the General Safety Regulations.

    9. Assess hazards related to crane operation and determine emergency response procedures.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants are issued a certificate in recognition of this achievement. This course is not designed to certify individuals as highly skilled operators or riggers, as only through practice and use of the prescribed safe operating procedures will skill level increase.
